What happens in the first visit?
The first visit is 1 hour for ADD/ADHD, 1.5 hours for developmental assessments – for conditions such as Autism, PANDAS, or speech delay. I take a full medical history and explain the ‘wheels’ of the methylation cycle, what it means for your child, and we discuss treatment protocols.
- Methyl B12 injections: are prescribed and administered in the first visit when necessary. A short tutorial on how to inject them at home is included. This is an opportunity to discuss safety, injection concerns, and the benefits of the methyl B12 vitamin.
- Dietary changes: are explained and resource handouts are given. This is an anti-inflammatory diet and is a large part of treatment success. Please come in with any questions or concerns you may have. A ‘low sugar, low processed foods’ diet is the main treatment for constipation, food intolerances, sugar addiction, and maintaining the methylation cycle. Sugar and food colourings in particular can impact the behaviour of those with ADHD.
- Gut health: addressing constipation, pain, and diarrhea is important. 50% of the body’s dopamine and ~90% of serotonin is made in the intestine. Things like probiotics, magnesium, and the dietary changes can help with these conditions.
- Testing: options are usually reserved for a later appointment, or if no gains/improvements are made in the first 4-6 weeks. Testing neurotransmitter levels is possible using the Organic Acids Test. Urinary heavy metal testing, blood tests for nutrients, and food sensitivity testing can all be useful.
How long is treatment? How often are appointments?
Treatment varies depending on gains made by you or your child. As with any naturopathic treatment, 3 months is a good minimum although I aim to see some results within 4-6 weeks. In some cases treatment can last up to 3 years depending on individual goals. Appointments are once a month for the first few months, and then every 3 months once you are comfortable with the treatment plan.
Are any supplements harmful? Do the injections hurt?
Nothing I give will harm you or your child. The methyl B12 injections pinch slightly but should not cause severe pain. B12 levels will measure high in your blood but there is no known toxicity. Things like fish oil, probiotics, magnesium, or B vitamins may cause nausea or diarrhea in which case you can stop and contact the clinic (by phone or email). Email is particularly helpful because it allows us to keep track of what is happening and put it into your file.
Aggravations (of symptoms) may happen when first taking certain supplements which can be a good thing! Things like rashes, acne, anxiety, lethargy, or OCD symptoms may happen which do not last. These are good things to note as it tells us where your genes may be under-functioning in the methylation cycle, and how to optimize/individualize the nutrients for you. Your body is the ultimate test!
Do You Make a Formal Diagnosis?
As a Naturopathic Doctor I am trained in how many conditions in primary care are diagnosed, and screen for important conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. I do not make a formal evaluation or diagnosis of ADHD or other mental health concerns. Your medical doctor or specialist is qualified to do this. I am happy to converse with them about your concerns and progress.
Is Naturopathy Covered By My Insurance?
Naturopathy is not covered under OHIP and is a form of privatized medicine, much like massage or chiropractic therapy. Many insurance companies cover a certain amount for naturopathic medicine and in-house testing. If you bring in your insurance card we can check during your appointment through TELUS Health.
